After my initial infusion and a few days of discomfort, I am feeling fine again, so I want to blog about the Inauguration.
We had all anticipated some kind of distraction and destruction at the Inauguration of Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris. Thankfully, we couldn’t have been more wrong. It turned out to be a beautiful day, an historic day and a colorful day. The women who were the main characters of the day all wore clothes of solid colors. We were awash in hues of purple, turquoise, cranberry, powder blue. The singers, Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Katie Perry (sang later during the fireworks display) and poet laureate, Amanda Gorman, wore yellow, white, and black and red. The colors just added to the color of the day from the Pomp and Circumstance to the tradition of a peaceful transition of the president and vice-president. We saw many luminaries from senators to vice president Pence. Donald Trump did not attend as he was still causing chaos re. the big lie, i.e.. that he won the election. Joe Biden said that the only thing he and trump agreed on was that he, trump, would not attend.
We all lifted a sigh of relief when the president, Joe Biden, was sworn in. And the same when Kamala Harris was sworn in. The theme of his speech was “we are the united states of America and that he would work as hard for the people who voted for him as those who did not. He will be a president for “all Americans”, “We must end this uncivil war”. It was a speech of unification and hope for the future and the need to treat each other with dignity and respect. He talked about restoring the soul of America and went on to discuss the future needs of America; the climate change crises, for example. While referring to the Covid-19 he said,“ we must set aside politics and finally face this pandemic as one nation”. He further went on to discuss those beyond our boarders. “We will repair our alliances and engage in the world once again”. He addressed the growing inequity, the sting of systemic racism. Reciting his future plans, he said this is a time for boldness as there is much to do. He ended by saying he would defend the Constitution. He will defend our democracy. And his final words were, “So with purpose and resolve, we turn to those tasks of our time. Sustained by faith, driven by conviction, and devoted to one another and to this country we love with all our hearts. May God bless America and may God protect our troops. Thank you America”.
It was a very uplifting address. The new President and Vice-President then went into their guarded cars and as they drove close to the White House, left their cars and paraded down the street as every predecessor did during the celebration. This year we did not have a parade, though, because of the Coronavirus.
Since it was early enough because there was no parade, the President went into his office and started to work on Day One, as he promised. Since then he has signed 30 some Executive Orders and has been in the office every day working. Now on to the Legislative part of his agenda. May God bless him and Vice-President Kamala Harris and all our elected officials in Congress and keep them safe.
