I made my second visit to the neighborhood Beauty Salon because I needed color again so I don’t look like a little old lady with gray hair. I look like a middle age lady with blond hair as most of the women in the beauty parlor do, no matter what their age. I tried being a little old lady with gray hair but it just didn’t work for me. Gray hair doesn’t match my skin which is more Mediterranean. How is that for a description? It has been over two and a half months since my last color, so you see, it was definitely time. Because I have curly hair, the gray didn’t show too much through the fading blond hair. But I noticed that I was turning gray at the temples as well as my roots. Aging…………….why is it when men turn gray at the temples, they are “distinguished” looking? Um……
It has been over ten weeks since my visit to the Beauty Parlor. And, yes, the masks are still in place due to our Covid-19 Pandemic. Funny what you can get used to. Or is this what is known as the “new” normal? Florida has one of the highest numbers of cases in the country because our Governor won’t mandate wearing masks. NY’s Governor Cumo has and their numbers are extremely low, if almost non existent because he did mandate wearing masks.
For a Tuesday, the Beauty Salon was relatively empty. I asked Denise if they were busier for the weekend? And yes, they are. I did not feel the urgency that I had during my last visit. (Read the May 20th Blog.) After all, that was when the BS opened up after having been closed for months and the women had been tearing their hair out after waiting so long for their reopening. On this visit, I noticed a woman who was checking in and not wearing a mask was asked to leave. So we are still being vigilant as it looks as though this virus will be with us for a long time.

WOW……..NEWS FLASH. Just as I am writing about beauty salons (really important to women), the news came blaring over the TV that Joe Biden had selected his running mate! He has chosen Karmila Harris, (really important to women) as she is the first woman and the first person of color to be selected as a VP running mate. This is an historic day! And tonight Joe Biden will be standing next to his pick for the county and, indeed, the world to see. What a great visual this will be; an older white man standing next to a vibrant younger woman of color whose parents are from India and Jamaica. This will be a picture of what this country really looks like and represents in the year 2020.
I am sure I will have much more to write about in the near future; but for now, there will be a celebration of having some good news, for a change, in this country. And maybe the cloud that we have been living under is giving way to a brighter future.
